Marco Loi was born in Samugheo, in a small village in the center of Sardinia.
His studies in the world of visual communication have led him to observe, portray and connect with the place in which he was born and raised. He seeks to investigate the anthropological and social-behavioral aspects of his land, the fragile equilibrium between humankind and nature, the fascinating idea of living in a magical place, isolated and surrounded by the sea.
The territorial component perpetually shapes and contaminates his research, which is why the micro-histories of his native land have often been a source of visual exploration. Marco Loi graduated in graphic design and visual communication at the ISIA U (Urbino), with a thesis entitled “The noise of an invisible land”, investigating the hidden landscape of Sardinia’s military bases, its censorship and the inaccessible, heterotopic spaces.
Several projects, dictated by a profound awareness of the dynamism of contemporary society, such as “Oltre il Confino” (Beyond the Confinement), have progressed into archival research on the field. His work is characterised by contemplation of past vicissitudes, and a collection of visual material able to reconstruct distant and forgotten circumstances, all of which are then translated into visual projects, generating narratives which foster a dialogue between creative images, historical concepts and objects trouvèes. Marco Loi’s works are often focused on socio-political issues, seeking to delve into the impenetrable and the invisible. In all his works, the presence of a lingering limit, either geographical or cultural, continuously challenges him to move, overcome, quiver, and question the nature of confinement.
To achieve this, he explores numerous visual mediums, from photography, to editorial graphics, to the manual weaving practices passed along by his family, seeking to communicate his message through the braiding of threads, integrating the ancient techniques of local craftsmanship with a conceptual and artistic framework.
